1. What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable form of botulinum toxin type A, which is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It’s initial use was to control spasms in different muscles. It was then noticed that people that were treated with this medication had a significant decrease of dynamic wrinkles surrounding the area treated. Nowadays the treatment of Botox for facial rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction and prevention is becoming more and more acceptable and even desirable. There are 5 FDA approved botulinum toxins used for cosmetic reasons. Botox was the first one approved in 2002 to treat glabellar lines (the 11’s) then Dysport, Xeomin, Jeaveau and Daxxify followed. They all have the same active ingredient and work very similarly with few differences during their purification methods.
2. How does it work?
The botulinum toxin A blocks the nerve signals that tell the muscle to contract. This way it maintains the muscle smooth, since it does not contract it decreases wrinkles and prevents new ones from forming.
3. What is the price?
We charge $12 dollar per unit, you can expect to pay around $300-$700 per session depending of your needs and what plan you feel comfortable with.
4. What should I expect from my visit?
This is a medical procedure and you must have your medical history taken, undergo an evaluation and your goals must be discussed. The initial visit may take about 30 minutes with all the consent forms and medical documentation. Subsequent visits take about 15 minutes. After evaluation, and if you are determined to be a good candidate for the procedure, the doctor will inject small amounts of the product in the areas where you desire a decrease of wrinkles.
5. What would make me not a good candidate?
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, any active infection in the area or if you have had an allergic reaction to the product in the past would mean you would not be able to have the procedure.
6. What are some of the potential side effects?
The most common side effect is a mild headache that may last 1-3 days. Possibility of pain, swelling and bruising at the injection site. Allergic reactions. Eye dryness and droopy eyelid (rare and temporary).
7. How do I prepare for my appointment?
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours. Avoid non-essential blood thinners such as fish oil, aspirin, and ibuprofen for a couple of days before your treatment. This will help prevent bruising.
8. What should I do or not do after my procedure?
You could move your muscles that were injected on the first day to help them take in the product well. You should avoid rubbing or putting pressure in the areas injected. This will help prevent unwanted migration of the product. Avoid strenuous exercise, sauna, and tanning for 24 hours to avoid bruising. Always contact your doctor if you have any concerns.
9. What else should I know?
The effects will be noticeable in 4-7 days but it will finish settling in at about 2 weeks. At that point, it is recommended to see your doctor and verify the results, if there is any fine-tuning or enhancement it can be done at that moment to get the best wrinkle treatment anti-aging results. The results should last 3-4 months, but will vary by person. Lastly but most importantly, enjoy your refreshed new look!
