What are fillers?
An injectable dermal filler is a gel like substance that is injected to restore volume, augment facial features or restore the area to a smoother appearance. Most of the fillers used today due to their positive safety profile are made from Hyaluronic Acid which is a natural component of our body. Other fillers are made of calcium hydroxylapetite or polylactic acid, these tend to stimulate collagen and the results last longer.
How do I know which filler I need?
Your doctor will recommend the best suited for you. There are different types of fillers and the one chosen will be dependent of the area treated amongst other factors. For example, a filler used to define the jawline will most likely not to be used on the lips. For the cheeks and jawline you want a “stronger substance” than in the lips or under the eyes that you will want a softer more malleable type of face fillers.
What are the costs?
The cost per syringe of hyaluronic acid is $700. We also work with biostimulator fillers, and these have a cost of $850. These prices include all follow up appointments.
What are some of the potential side effects?
Bruising is the most common side effect. You can start taking arnica pills 2-3 days prior to the appointment. You should also not schedule an appointment 2 weeks before a big event. If bruising occurs it should resolve in 2 weeks. As with any injection there is potential for pain, infection and swelling. For swelling you can use an ice pack for no more than 10 minute intervals and for pain you can use Tylenol. Assymetry is possible and sensations of bumps. You can massage the bumps out and in about 2 weeks the product should have settled in and most asymmetry and swelling should have resolved. Dermal fillers are considered to be safe but there are rare negative potential side effects such as blindness (if product goes into vessel) and allergic reactions.
How do I prepare for my filler appointment?
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Avoid non-essential blood thinning medications, such as ibuprofen, fish oil and aspirin. Preferably come without make up. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you are not a candidate for fillers.
What should I expect on the day of the procedure?
You will have an evaluation and if desired numbing cream will be placed for comfort. After filling out medical history and signing the consent forms, there will be pictures taken for before and after. Usually the procedure takes about 30min. Patients tend to tolerate well the procedure and enjoy the results.
What should I do after my injection?
Avoid intense heat in the area. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs or tanning for at least a day. Avoid alcohol and smoking to help the healing process and avoid bruising. You can use ice packs (10 minute intervals) for swelling and Tylenol for pain. If able try to sleep face-up. If you have any concerns, please reach out to your doctor.
What else should I expect or know?
Usually you can see results on the same day but it will continue to settle. The finished result should be appreciated within 2 weeks. Fillers vary on how long they last but most results can last from 6-15 months. Depending on the filler used the cost of fillers usually range from $700-$1000 per syringe.
